If you turned back the clock to 1998 and spoke to lawyers in the first few years of their careers, you would find that they were sceptical about spending time working overseas. As those who travelled were often treated as less qualified than their counterparts who had remained on the UK legal treadmill, concerns about promotion prospects after returning home dominated.
