A US judge has given the green light to a $500m (£252.4m) class action brought against international conglomerate General Electric (GE) by one of its most senior lawyers.

Lorene Schaefer, a former high-flyer and general counsel at GE’s transportation arm, has won the first round of her sex discrimination case, which accuses GE of giving unfair preference to men in promotions to the company’s top legal jobs.
