E-learning, when it was introduced to the business world in the mid-1990s, was championed as an alternative solution to the expensive away-day training routine that law firms of all sizes still put into practice. The rapid growth of the internet, the development of broadband and the universality with which online technology became integrated with the modern workplace all suggested a very bright future for early champions of the e-learning phase.

The legal sector in particular was quick to embrace online training for its busy lawyers. Of particular interest was desk-based training which offered cheaper and more time-effective knowledge based solutions.
