It was once the case that merely ‘an apple a day would keep the doctor away’, but with the increased emphasis on a healthy lifestyle, sophisticated nutrition and health claims in the advertising, labelling and presentation of foods have become widespread. From 1 July, 2007, European Union (EU) Regulation 1924/2006 on nutrition and health claims has applied in all EU member states, with the aims of harmonising such claims across the EU and providing a framework to ensure consumers are not misled.

This trend towards increased labelling and information for consumers has been mirrored by potentially conflicting moves to curb excessive packaging.
