An increasing number of local authorities are looking to deliver regeneration within deprived pockets of their communities. They are often authorities with contaminated or difficult sites and limited funds to achieve their aspirations. Such authorities are usually looking to develop their land by pulling in different stakeholders and harnessing funding from regional development agencies, private sector developers and other funders of regeneration, such as in leisure, the Lottery Fund or Sport England.

Health facilities and services are often key constituents of this kind of integrated regeneration scheme. NHS primary care trusts (PCTs) and general practitioners (GPs) are particularly appropriate partners for local authorities as health and community services such as leisure and libraries are often teamed together to produce positive social outcomes.
