Lawyers love reading the sports pages. Even for the ones that know very little about it, there seems to be an inherent need to keep abreast of Premiership football affairs, if only to be able to discuss it with clients.

Even so, the transfer of one of Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer’s most active deal lawyers of recent years, capital markets partner Chris Mort, to become Newcastle United’s deputy chairman for at least a year, seems to be taking it a bit far. Mort has been granted special leave from Freshfields and will be so senior at the club that manager Sam Allardyce will report directly to him.
