The Waste (Amendment) (Northern Ireland) Order 2007 amends and updates the current legislation dealing with waste disposal management in Northern Ireland. The 2007 Order amends the Waste and Contaminated Land (Northern Ireland) Order 1997. Although the majority of the new provisions replicate those in Part 5 of the Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act 2005, there are significant differences with the introduction of new and more stringent provisions for Northern Ireland.
Throughout the consultation period for this legislation, the Department of Environment Northern Ireland (DoE) stated its purpose was to tackle illegal waste activity, which it sees as a major problem in Northern Ireland.
