The Legal Services Commission (LSC) is to axe three of its regional Public Defender Service (PDS) offices as part of a cost-cutting drive, it was announced this week.

Regional hubs in Birmingham, Chester and Liverpool are all set to close after just six years as part of the first salaried criminal legal aid service in England and Wales. It is understood the closures will affect around 25 staff, including many PDS lawyers employed directly by the LSC.
