The Government's legal aid budget will top £8bn over the next four years, according to the latest figures at Whitehall. Constitutional affairs minister Vera Baird revealed the projections, which apply from 2007-08 to 2010-11, following a Parliamentary question last week from shadow secretary of state for constitutional affairs Oliver Heald. The news comes as unrest grows over the Government's controversial plans for a comprehensive overhaul of the current system.
