It has been an exhilarating year for the legal profession. The surge of deal activity that has powered the UK’s leading firms to record financial results has provided the perfect environment for lawyers to excel.

By definition, the people who gathered at Old Billingsgate Market on 29 November for the Legal Week Awards 2006 represented the cream of the profession. We are grateful to them for taking time out of their hectic schedules to attend an evening that not only celebrated the professionalism and endeavour of the business law community, but also demonstrated the bonds that make it such a thriving sector. The awards part of the night reached their climax with The City of London Lifetime Achievement Award. Former Simmons & Simmons senior partner Janet Gaymer proved a predictably popular – and eloquent – winner. On behalf of Legal Week, I would like to congratulate her for making such a mark on the profession during more than 35 years of service.
