There is a common theme to their recollections. A flurry of deal activity in 1986 as the broking firms were snapped up by banks was followed by a period when London’s leading lawyers were forced to get to grips with the new regulatory regime. “Overnight we had a new regulatory practice, advising on the Financial Services Act and the new Securities & Investment Board,” observes Childs.
