The resignation of Hewlett Packard’s (HP’s) general counsel has brought renewed focus on the risks facing US general counsel as Ann Baskins last week became the latest senior legal officer to resign amid a corporate scandal.

Baskins stepped down last week having come under pressure after it was alleged that private investigators working for the company’s board spied on two employees as part of an investigation into boardroom leaks. Her resignation followed shortly after that of HP chairwoman Patricia Dunn.
