Sony and Bertelsmann Music Group (BMG) are to appeal against the surprise ruling that annulled their 2004 merger, it was confirmed today (5 October).
The deal – which would have created the world’s second largest music company and saw Slaughter and May act for BMG, with Sony represented by Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton – originally received merger clearance from the European Commission (EC).
