It is not unusual for cost-conscious companies to reward hard-working general counsel with the prestigious additional role of company secretary, giving in-house lawyers a seat on the board, their own parking space and – most important of all – access to the executive bathroom.

However, some of these multi-talented multi-taskers have been forced to add value in other, less glamorous, ways. One such general counsel/ company secretary recently revealed to The Diary that his key strategic responsibilities now include checking that the heating and ventilation in the boardroom is working properly.
