When SJ Berwin secured a mandate to advise legacy US buy-out giant Hicks Muse Tate & Furst in 2004, few UK partners seriously thought it was a taste of things to come.
But as deal values continue to surge and sponsors grow ever more hungry for limited European assets, US private equity giants instructing UK advisers are becoming commonplace. Even Carlyle, which appeared welded to Latham & Watkins, has been putting considerable amounts of work to European advisers, with Clifford Chance (CC) acknowledged to be the main winner.
