Readers have now had a week to digest the Legal Week Top 50, along with our analysis that the top three firms – Clifford Chance, Linklaters and Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer – are set to break away from their rivals. To test this theory, Legal Week established its own ‘brains trust’ of legal anoraks. After spending several days in a darkened room, they came up with a formula that, when applied to the law firm results, reveals that, in fact, an entirely different group of firms are leading the way, forming a new ‘Ferrari circle’.

Only joking. But there is a tendency for people to get a touch myopic during the annual law firm results season. The key is to try to put the annual results into context. And one of the best ways of doing that is to look at the performance of the top firms over time.
