The public may be sceptical about the value of lawyers but recent research confirms that there is no shortage of aspiring solicitors eager to enter the UK’s ever-swelling legal profession.

The latest Law Society annual statistical report shows that the number of practising solicitors on the roll last year topped 100,000 for the first time, driven in part by the popularity of the profession with women. The report, the most accurate picture of the profession’s demographics in England and Wales, shows a 4.1% increase in the number of solicitors on the roll, which swelled to 126,142 in the year to 31 July, 2005, including non-practising solicitors.
