the law society: coming under pressure to cut spendingThe Law Society is sidelining post-Clementi plans to introduce voluntary contributions for its representative duties in a move that will see it continue to fund most of its activities through a compulsory levy.

The society’s decision-making council voted last month to ditch proposals to make contributions for its representative functions at least partially voluntary – a measure that had been floated as part of its ongoing governance overhaul. It is estimated that around 30% of the Law Society’s current £94m annual spending goes on representation and law reform activities.
