We all live with time pressures, so it is understandable why some people say law students should be better, more practically prepared for the day they start practising the law. In my view, however, excessive professional preparation is a serious mistake. Law courses have a different purpose – and lawyers do not learn practice while at university, regardless of how many professional elements are included in their programme.

Debate over the direction of legal education is a hot topic in Poland. And there is no lack of support for the theory that the model on which lawyers’ education is based should be more professional and should prepare students for work as soon as they leave university. Many think that the time dedicated to studying general subjects should be shortened in favour of subjects that are more practical and give direct preparation to take up work.
