The Law Society is facing sustained political pressure after the legal profession’s most senior watchdog last week launched a withering attack on the body over its role in the escalating row about compensation for sick miners.

The Legal Services Ombudsman, Zahida Manzoor, lambasted Chancery Lane’s investigation of the affair. The Ombudsman’s rebuke comes in the wake of claims that a substantial group of solicitors cheated thousands of miners out of payments owed to them under a multi-billion pound Government compensation scheme.
