The management of electronic documents is one of the biggest challenges currently facing litigation lawyers. This challenge is particularly acute during disclosure, but is present throughout the litigation process, from the initial merits assessment through to the preparation for trial.

The ease (and sometimes careless abandon) with which electronic documents can be produced and distributed has a massive impact on the volume of documents that a lawyer may have to review. The fact that documents can often be stored in multiple locations on servers, hard drives and a variety of storage media only exacerbates the problem.
