It is the start of a new year, a time for post-Christmas depression, dreary weather and the arrival of credit or store card bills detailing Christmas spending we had been trying to forget.

Debt and bankruptcy are currently making headline news. Consumer debt exceeding the £1trn mark in August 2004 (it currently stands at £1.148trn and is increasing at a rate of 10% per year) was well publicised, as are the bankruptcy figures released by the Department of Trade and Industry every quarter. Bankruptcy has even made two appearances on Tonight With Trevor McDonald in the past year; fame indeed.
