On 30 November last year, Andrew Garard picked up an early Christmas present for his Cable & Wireless legal department, collecting the trophy for UK in-house department of the year at the Legal Week Awards.

But less than two months later, the telecoms giant announced that its highly-rated general counsel had decided to leave. In a brief statement, it said that Garard was leaving “to seek new challenges following the successful resolution of a number of legal proceedings”. He has been succeeded by Nick Cooper, formerly general counsel of Energis, which the telecoms giant acquired in August 2005 for £674m.
