Sir John Brigstocke has been appointed as the inaugural Judicial Appointments and Conduct Ombudsman, by royal assent. The move complements the launch of the Judicial Appointments Commission (JAC), the new body which will take responsibility for appointing judges in England and Wales from April.

Brigstocke, a former Naval Commander-in-Chief, is currently chairman of the University of Buckingham. In his new role, he will investigate general complaints about judicial appointments as well as reviewing the handling of complaints about conduct within the judiciary.
