Remember Murphy and Parkinson. Murphy was the old wag who said: “If anything can go wrong, it will.” And Parkinson said: “Work expands to fill the time available for its completion.”

I have long and bitter experience of agreeing with Murphy but Parkinson is wrong. He should have said that work expands to fill the time available for its completion… and then some. I am not jaded about this, it is how life as a project manager is, and if every component of a project always went right and was delivered on time, we could set out a project plan, hand it to subordinates and leave them to get on with it but projects do need to be managed.
