The BBC is planning to relocate up to 1,800 employees from London to Manchester, a move that will increase the percentage of the BBC’s 27,000 employees who are based outside London from 42% to 50%.
Any other employers contemplating such a change will ask whether they can force their employees to change their place of work and what issues might arise. The desired move may be due to expansion or contraction of activities, or simply the fact that the employer has found new and more appropriate accommodation for its workforce. Many people also have jobs that require a degree of mobility in order to enable them to carry out their duties.
