January is upon us and the familiar taste of sour grapes is with us again as expensively-assembled legal PR teams moan that Legal Week isn’t comparing oranges to apples.

The cause for this annual gripeathon is the publication of 2004′s M&A deal rankings. Be they Merger-market, Thomson Financial or Bloomberg, law firms habitually grumble when one result doesn’t suit them, while keeping quiet when they get the rub of the green. Firms also typically attempt to portray the variations between different information providers as somehow discrediting the tables.
