Undaunted by the three-year deal drought and numerous false dawns, City lawyers are entering 2005 in an upbeat mood, with a clear majority of law firms predicting sharp increases in fee income during the next 12 months.

The latest quarterly Legal Week/ EJ Legal business confidence survey found 93% of respondents expecting an upturn in total fee income in 2005, with 58% expecting a rise of 10% or more. Seven percent said fee income would grow by more than a quarter at their firms, with a further 7% expecting growth of between 20% and 25%.
