Today (25 November) is the day, jokes Jones Day UK managing partner Russell Carmedy, that he makes an annual prayer, marking as it does the agreement in principle of Gouldens to merge with the US giant.

But how much does Carmedy – renowned as Gouldens’ most ambitious corporate lawyer and very much the driving force behind the deal – have to be thankful for? Given the turbulent history of the combined firm – swiftly raising billing expectations, dropping Gouldens’ name, axing 10% of its post-merger London staff – it has understandably drawn a mixed response from the market.
