I knew I should have stuck with my initial career plans – either a ballerina or an air stewardess. I mean, no teenager ever woke up one morning and thought: “I know, I want to look after the IT in a law firm”. At least the annual budgeting exercise is finally over – and a calm peace reigns before we start all the implementation processes.
This is a particularly nice time of year for me. The hand wringing is finished, the head scratching is over and the spread-sheets are pristine and circulated to all. The budget narrative always poses a particular challenge to me, as I’m entreated to use simple, non-technical English. Apparently, ‘technical language’ includes such terms as ‘mouse’ and ‘server’. On second thoughts, I also wanted to be a best-selling author, (a la Jackie Collins rather than Booker Prize) so maybe I’m just doing the same thing now, but the offerings are a little shorter and there are no rude bits. I wonder: if I put in rude bits, do you think they would notice?
