Are you being paid what you are worth? For in-house lawyers who traditionally have not earned as much as their counterparts in private practice, or for those still in private practice looking to make the move in-house, keeping an eye on the going rate is important. And as the number of lawyers working in-house has mushroomed, so the scope to benchmark salaries has risen.

Hays Legal recently carried out a salary survey of the entire legal market, with sector and regional breakdowns of corporate counsel pay. The signs from the survey are that activity levels are on the up, and that the market will continue to improve in the rest of 2004. While much of recruitment during the slow economy of 2001 to 2003 was replacement, Hays believes the survey shows that legal departments are beginning to see new roles created, and teams growing.
