Some of America’s most powerful law firms are lining up to defend their tobacco clients in the US Department of Justice’s $280bn (£156.2bn) claim against major cigarette manufacturers.

The trial started on 21 September in Washington DC and promises to be one of the most important cases to hit corporate America. Judge Gladys Kessler is presiding over the case against Philip Morris USA, Altria, RJ Reynolds, the Council for Tobacco Research USA, the Tobacco Institute USA, the Liggett Group, Brown & Williamson, American Tobacco and BAT.
