It is an accolade that any city would love to have. Liverpool’s Capital of Culture is a chance to raise its profile in the international arena and attract new investment.

But as organisers start planning for 2008, at grassroots level something more spontaneous is happening. Since well before the award was announced, Liverpool has been undergoing something of a cultural renaissance. While huge redevelopment is changing the face of the city, on the streets there is a much more vibrant feel. Creative industries are thriving and Liverpool is home to a growing community of writers, artists, musicians and designers.
