With the arrival of the desktop PC in the early 1980s, most technologists predicted that it would only be a matter of time before we were all talking to our PCs and throwing out keyboards. The promise of speech recognition (SR) looked distinctly possible in the not too distant future. But 20 years on, SR has proved a lot harder to perfect than expected.

Nevertheless, many firms have experimented with SR and some even see it as having a place within the mix of technologies offered to fee earners.
