The development of e-billing in the UK market has been tortuously slow, but is last month’s release of a new data standard to facilitate the transfer of financial information between law firms and their clients a sign that electronic billing is finally set for take-off?

The standard, based on the Legal Electronic Data Exchange 1998B Standard (LEDES), which was developed by PricewaterhouseCoopers in the US, has been developed by a team from the Legal IT Innovators Group (LITIG). The team was led by Wragge & Co’s head of strategic development Derek Southall and Andrew Dey, the projects and operations manager for Barclays Bank’s legal function.
