On a recent visit to Poland, The Diary learned that Gide’s Warsaw managing partner, Stanislaw Dwernicki, has royal connections. Should the first 249 people in line to the English crown die in his lifetime, Mr Dwernicki’s family tree means he will be able to don his crown and become the first King Stanislaw of England.
