Documents are an integral part of the working day for law firms. Contracts, statements, correspondence, case papers, rulings, et al have to be created, reviewed, retained and distributed. Also law firms create large quantities of information from their own back-office systems.

It is not surprising that the legal industry was an early adopter of document management systems. They were originally used to manage paper archives and were independent of other business systems. In many organisations they remain independent and only support part of the business process.
