The Law Society has called on Prudential chairman Sir David Clementi to introduce a “light touch” umbrella regulator leaving the Law Society’s powers intact when he concludes his review into legal regulation later this year.

In a letter, seen by Legal Week, that was sent to Clementi in December, Law Society president Peter Williamson calls for a regulator modelled on the Council for the Regulation of Healthcare Professionals (CRHP) – while further distancing complaints handling from Chancery Lane’s other powers to police the profession.
