One of the more interesting findings of the Legal Director Benchmarker survey was that although more than a third (36%) of general counsel expected to increase their business in the 10 European Union (EU) accession countries, less than a seventh (14%) had spent any time or money preparing for that eventuality.
The 10 accession countries are as follows: Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovenia in central Europe; Estonia, Latvia; and Lithuania in the Baltic States; Slovenia in the Balkans and Malta and Cyprus in the Mediterranean. At a time of limited economic growth in the West, most of these countries have experienced reasonable increases in gross domestic product. According to John Abramson, regional counsel at AIG central Europe & CIS: “I am heartened by how well the accession countries have geared up for entry. According to a recent EU monitoring report on their respective states of readiness, Slovenia came out on top, and Poland seems to have the most challenges”.
