US national giant Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld is in merger talks with Washington DC-based Shaw Pittman.
If successful, the talks, which started last month, would create a 1,300-lawyer firm with a turnover of $767.5m (£465.5m), making it the sixth-largest practice in the US by fee income.
