itAs time goes by, innovative and cutting edge technology that was once the preserve of the largest firms becomes generic and trickles down to the rest of the profession – at which point, one might argue, it becomes truly useful. But does it also get watered down? One IT supplier complains it is hard to sell portal systems to medium-sized law firms because they are all convinced that they already have one.

However, a number of firms are genuinely migrating their online presence and client-reporting services into extranets. DMH – formerly Donne Mileham & Haddock – a member of the LawSouth network with offices in Sussex and London, has clicked into the portal trend, buying a plug-and-play system with intranet and extranet applications, in this case from Sorce.biz. The software was rolled out to a pilot group in less than a month.
