The birthday candles are burning bright in Brussels this year – the single market is celebrating its 10th anniversary. Unfortunately, the landmark has probably passed most Europeans by.

On 1 January 1993, the European Commission (EC), the Council of Ministers and the European Parliament deemed the goal of having a single market as ‘essentially accomplished’. Ten years on, single market pioneers are still pushing back the frontiers to a free market, with the service industries – legal services included – now the subject of the Competition Commission’s roving eye.
