The Diary has uncovered an intriguing theory as to why Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer has yet to secure a US merger.
It hinges on chief executive Alan Peck’s smoking habit. Apparently, the man who led the negotiations with both Freshfields’ German merger partners was always reluctant to fly to the US because of the no smoking ban on transatlantic flights.
