News that a powerful user of legal services is to review its panel firms never fails to send a shudder through the insurance specialists of the firms involved.

So emotions must have been running especially high across a host of firms last month after insurance giant AXA revealed it was to launch a review of its panel of external advisers once again. This followed reports that its claims managers were still using firms deleted from the panel, in the wake of a 2001 review which saw the roster cut from 30 to 12 firms.
