Few large law firms seem more focused on following a ‘best-of-breed’ technology strategy than Birmingham-based Wragge & Co, where the IT function is regarded equally as a systems integration unit and a support department. The firm is unusual in its approach but has recently won several awards for its deployment of IT.

Richard Haywood, the firm’s new managing partner, has identified “the smart use of IT” as a key element of attracting business in some of the firm’s most lucrative verticals, such as property and financial services law. He says the main challenge for his predecessor, Quentin Poole – now senior partner – was to get the partners interested in IT, but now even most of the old guard appreciate the benefits it is bringing the firm.
