In the current climate almost every law firm is trying to cut costs. From high-rise corporate boardrooms in the City to humble high street offices in small regional towns, lawyers are focusing on costs and internal efficiency to improve their margins.

This backdrop of doom and gloom can be seen as both a threat and an opportunity for the law firm’s IT department. On the one hand, partners are keen to reduce budgets for what they often see as a cost centre or even a money sink. On the other hand – from an academic standpoint at least – the whole premise of IT is to improve efficiency levels and to render business more profitable.
