In the document management (DM) market, the key players are always trying to add more functionality, improve scalability and play catch-up with each other. The most recent trend has seen DM vendors going down the Java 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE) route and moving away from proprietary architecture.

In the DM arena, iManage was an early adopter of J2EE for its Worksite MP product – launched in early 2002 – providing the first content management server built to open computing standards of J2EE, from the ground up. Other vendors have had to modify their technology.
