High StreetThe ‘City’ or ‘high street’ is a big issue for students intending to qualify as solicitors these days. Should you head for a training contract in the multinational City-type practice, or the more traditional firm in your local high street?

The media has played a significant role in this question in recent times. We see programmes like Ally McBeal and Trust and imagine that life in the City firms is about high drama; a frenzy of champagne receptions and expensive, fast cars. We also read in the press about high-flying ‘fat cat’ lawyers earning six-figure salaries. Corporate law has a certain ring to it that appeals to students, and which many associate only with the larger corporate style firms. But is there life elsewhere than in a City set up?
