Do you know what a BlackBerry is? If your first thought is a fruit, then you probably fall into the majority of the UK in-house community. If, however, you picture a mobile wireless e-mail pager, congratulations and welcome to the digital world.

Chances are, however, that you know what it is because your external legal advisers take them out with a flourish to fix a meeting, contact their office or draft a document, while you stumble to call your secretary to put the date in the diary. But increasingly in-house legal functions are recognising the benefits of mobile systems. Last month Legal Director‘s sister title Legal IT, in association with Hewlett Packard, surveyed 50 IT directors from within the UK’s top 100 law firms on the systems they had tested or deployed in the last year. The survey covered a broad, but not comprehensive, range of hardware and provides a useful insight into which systems are most popular among the legal community.
