As anyone who has watched David Attenborough will know, the lesser-spotted baboon has two options when faced with imminent danger – flight or fight. In a depressed market, a partner in a law firm is faced with the same two, mutually exclusive, choices.

Not for a moment would I suggest that partners resemble baboons in any other regard. For one, it is a well-known fact that the lesser-spotted baboon rarely offers a charge-out rate of above £150 per hour. However, we should not lose sight of the fact that a depressed market, just like the sight of an unfettered corporate client, brings out the animal in all of us.
